Motivating an uninvolved advantaged church to engage in restitution

[some suggestions for a step by step approach]

1.  Pray and ask God for his heart and perspective on this matter. Ask him to give you a deep humility and the grace of repentance . Then ask for revelation as you read his word and discuss this with others.

2.  Study what the bible has to say on this topic for yourself. Also see 'A Bible Study on Restitution'

3.  Seek out some believers from a disadvantaged background to make friends with them.

4.  Ask them to pray with you and then study the bible and discuss this issue with you.

5.  Seek out other bible studies and theological works done previously.

6.  Feel free to contact any one of us at the foundation at the numbers listed under “contact details” elsewhere on this document or on our website.

7.  Ask for a meeting with the leadership of your church to ask what they have thought about this issue and share the fruits of your own research and prayer with them.

Suggestions for the leadership :

8.  Invite a couple of fellow leaders/pastors from a disadvantaged community (dc) to come and meet with you to share their thoughts and feelings about restitution with you. Make sure that they are properly heard first rather than debated. Discussion should be around getting clarity on what is being said. Later one can begin to raise challenges and arguments- once one has fully listened and understood.

9.  Ask them for their wisdom in approaching this topic with the church.

10  Start to preach and teach on this matter to the church. Ensure that the matter is covered from an attitudinal perspective as well as from a material one.

11. Invite pastors/teachers/leaders from a dc (or from the foundation) to preach and teach your church on these matters.

12. Arrange a ‘leaders summit' for your key non-fulltime leaders. Invite speakers from other dc's. Give clear biblical teaching that is open for discussion.

13. Organise for them to go and visit a dc and meet with the local people and hear their life-experiences and stories.

14. Arrange a general summit for the church along similar lines to 12 above.

Suggestions for practical steps (other than already suggested in all the other papers so far)

15. Encourage the establishment of friendships across the lines of division.

16. Open a restitution fund for people to contribute to.

17. Invite the church (after consultation with church leaders in the community) to choose some community work in the dc that they would like to contribute to. (eg. Housing via Habitat for Humanity, etc.).

18. Arrange to twin with a church in the dc of your choice.

19. Set up a sponsorship fund (eg. Education and trainging sponsorhip to sponsor students from dc's for school, university or technical or theological institutions.etc.)

20. Begin discussion and study towards establishing a better understanding of wealth distribution in the church generally . So that once restitution has been deemed to have been done, we do not have a repeat of this situation. With this attitude and correct understanding of God's heart in Acts 2 + 4 that “ no-one claimed that any of his possessions was his own” we would never have had this problem in the first place. Communism was the devil's counterfeit for what the church had failed to put into practice.
